Strategic modelling in oncology

Client need

We were commissioned to develop an economic model to demonstrate the cost-effectiveness of an oncology drug. Unfortunately, the model deemed the treatment not cost-effective when applied to the whole population, which posed significant challenges for the client’s objective of securing reimbursement in key markets.

Our response

We carried out a targeted literature review to identify insights into sub-populations or factors that could impact cost-effectiveness. We also conducted comprehensive data analyses which allowed us to scrutinise patient demographics, treatment response rate, and other relevant parameters to identify patterns within the larger population. Through the research we were able to identify a credible sub-population in which the model showed the treatment to be dominant and result in favourable economic and clinical outcomes.

Client value

We presented a strategic reimbursement approach to the client. Rather than abandoning the pursuit of reimbursement, the client could seek reimbursement in targeted patient groups. This allowed the client to allocate resources more efficiently, directing resources to reimbursement efforts in sub-populations.
